$250 Million Towards Long Term Debt
Analysis of the provincial budget on a business community level is foremost. The Chamber is pleased to see the general business tax reduction from 13% to 12% with the Small Business threshold increasing from $450 thousand to $500 thousand. A Labour market agreement is to focus on training under-skilled workers, increasing nursing seats at educational facilities as well as for trades. The graduate retention program provides tuition rebates of up to $20 thousand to students over 7 years. A Premier’s Roundtable on Aboriginal Consultation will be initiated so as to focus on aboriginals being more involved in the economic future. These are crucial and much needed steps for the province in addressing the labour shortages and outflow to other provinces. An increased government portion on ag property tax relief increased 47% and residential/ commercial increased to 12% with the mention of a broader review of education tact structure forthcoming in the near future. The Chamber feels this falls short for the rural school systems and encourages a review sooner than later.
Securing and preserving the environment for future generations is also a priority with $10 million dedicated toward green initiatives and another $5 million in funding provided for parks.
